In 1985 Michelle Reynolds moved to Birmingham with a car load of hand-me-
down furniture and a stack of Metropolitan Home magazines. These helped
Michelle teach herself how to make
her own slipcovers to give new life to
her old furniture. She bartered for
an industrial sewing machine, bought
painter's drop cloths, and covered every
piece of furniture she had. This began
a practice of recycling what others would
discard. She worked as a visual merchandiser for
stores, all the while honing her design skills and craft.
When she became a full-time slipcover maker, the
fabric scraps piled up. Because she couldn't bear to
throw anything away, she turned them into
functional and wearable art. Handbags, upcycled
clothing and story quilts are all one-of-a-kind
creations.
